Quick: What do distributors hate most?
It’s probably item management. Also known as assortment management, it causes pain with a capital P.
Here’s the issue: if you’re like many distributors, you stock hundreds of thousands of items. Each item has a number assigned by the supplier. If you have several suppliers for the same item, you probably also have several numbers for the same item. Of course, suppliers may update and change item numbers from time to time. You probably also maintain local numbers. It’s an error-prone system that takes massive amounts of time to manage. It’s painful. No matter how you manage it.
That’s why we’ve included Item Import functionality in the Lawson M3 product line. The suite includes a basic item map that you can modify to meet your needs. You no longer have to start from scratch. You bring your numbers in (usually in a spreadsheet) and the system maps them into your structure. You can typically save a lot of time and money while also improving the accuracy of your numbering system.
We’re not saying we can eliminate all the pain associated with item management. But we should be able to help you reduce it from a capital P to a lower-case p.
