Business GPS

Assume for a moment that your company’s Board of Directors allocates € 3 million to invest in improving your business processes. How would you decide where to spend it? How would you identify the best opportunities for improvement?

It’s a question that companies have to answer every day. Should we invest in this or that? How do we compare with other companies in our sector? Where are we best in class? Where do we lag behind? What would our share price do if we invested in X? What if we invested in Y?

The Lawson Opportunity Analyzer (“OA”) was designed to answer precisely these questions. The general idea is to gather data on your company’s performance and compare it to industry benchmarks. This helps you identify your strengths and weaknesses compared to your competitors.

This is useful in and of itself and most ROI tools stop there. OA, however, is not simply an ROI tool. It’s a full-fledged business simulator. As we gather the data, OA builds a complete model of your business processes. You can “see” your entire business and ask very powerful what-if questions. You can identify opportunities for improvement and select the most important Key Performance Indicators. OA often turns up some surprising relationships. The most meaningful KPIs may not be obvious. You might not even think of them without a simulation. OA can also help you track these KPIs over time to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your investment.

OA is a powerful tool and comes with a structured methodology. A model may consist of over 60 tables of financial and performance data. It may ask you to think about your business in novel ways. Like, how should you allocate costs across different business units? The result, however, is like a business GPS. You tell it where you want to go; it tells you how to get there. It can also keep you on course along the way. If you know where you want to go but you’re not sure how to get there, give us a call. Even if you don’t use Lawson software, our business GPS can help simulate your business and stimulate your success.

As its name implies, The Lawson Opinionizer offers opinions. We believe we've got our facts straight but we don't guarantee it. A new Opinionizer appears every Monday. If you have an opinion, send an e-mail to Opinionizer@lawson.com
