Software as Pizza
We all know how to order pizza from the pizza service. You look up the number in the phone book (a standard directory of services). You call the pizza service on the phone (a standard communications method). The pizza service cooks the pizza. (You’ve never even asked how they do it). The service then delivers the pizza via a network of roads (another standard communications method).
Let’s say you order a pizza today and another next week. In between, the pizza service upgrades its kitchen and installs a new oven. Next week’s pizza is cooked more quickly and more evenly while using less energy. You can spend more time enjoying better tasting pizza. Otherwise, the kitchen upgrade doesn’t have any impact on you.
Why can’t we order business software the same way? Well, we may be doing exactly that sooner rather than later. That’s what Service Oriented Architectures are all about. It’s just a software service as opposed to a pizza service. At Lawson, we’ll develop new applications using the Landmark Application Designer. Landmark delivers service-oriented applications that are called – as services -- by our M3 and S3 systems. You should spend less time worrying about upgrades and more time enjoying the pizza.
As its name implies, The Lawson Opinionizer offers opinions. We believe we've got our facts straight but we don't guarantee it. A new Opinionizer appears every Monday. If you have an opinion, send an e-mail to Opinionizer@lawson.com
