Remember Betamax? How about Token Ring? Laser Discs? OS/2? WAP? So why would you run your enterprise applications on a proprietary foundation?

The BigCo ERP vendors write their own technical foundations. Even we’ll admit that they offer pretty good technology. But here’s what their foundations are really good at: locking you in. If you install the technical foundation from BigCo Vendor 1, it’s almost impossible to run applications from BigCo Vendor 2. Of course, the reverse is true as well. We understand how that helps the BigCo vendors, but how does it help you?

We’re different. We just want to help you solve business problems. So we don’t write our own proprietary technology foundations. Rather we use commercial, off-the-shelf foundations that any vendor – or end-user customer – could deploy. We focus our development dollars on solving business problems. By doing so, our customer can derive new value from existing investments. In short, we can help make customers stronger.

For the front-end of our applications, we use Microsoft technologies. Most people who use our applications already know how to use Microsoft Windows. So, we’ve incorporated it into our Smart Office solution. Smart Office gives you a brave new user experience based on Microsoft’s Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). As Gartner says, “Lawson is the first ERP vendor of note to use WPF technology. Because of this, the company can provide a rich UX that supports virtually limitless business processes using Microsoft applications”.

For the back-end of our applications, we use IBM technologies like the WebSphere family, including MQ Series, and the Enterprise Service Bus. These give you a solid, extensible, and open foundation to build your business on. We can help you do a lot with these IBM technologies. The one thing we can’t do is lock you in. We’re not trying to trap you. We’re just trying to make you stronger.

As its name implies, The Lawson Opinionizer offers opinions. We believe we've got our facts straight but we don't guarantee it. A new Opinionizer appears every Monday. If you have an opinion, send an e-mail to Opinionizer@lawson.com
