It’s fashionable for companies to talk about their environmental footprint and how to reduce it. But what about their IT footprint? The BigCo ERP vendors seem to think that a bigger footprint is a better footprint. It’s a charming strategy known as “seeking greater share of wallet.”
The wallet, of course, is yours. The BigCo vendors want more of it. How much is safe to give them? What proportion of your IT budget do you want to have controlled by any one vendor? Another way to ask the question is simple: Do you own your software or does your software own you?
